TALKING POINTS FOR DALLAS GREEN BUILDING ORDINANCE

  • Dallas is a major non-attainment area for air quality standards
    • asthma and other pulmonary dysfunction are the leading causes of hospital visits among children
    • we stand to lose federal funding

  • Energy costs are rising for all users
    • contributes to lack of affordable housing
    • contributes to business failures and housing foreclosures

  • Buildings use 76% of electricity nationwide and emit 46% of all greenhouse gases-they are an important component of the problem and must be part of the solution
  • Dallas can meet 101% of the expected growth in energy demand through efficiency and use of renewable energy sources
  • Energy efficiency is a less expensive approach than building new power plants
  • Mayor Leppert has asked us to commit to leadership in energy efficiency and green building-the time is now

Council,

Thank you for supporting the green building ordinance as the citizen task force has recommended it

AND
